The results of the annual survey conducted by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists indicate that, last year, Rockford led in DUI arrests in Illinois outside of Chicago. Rockford reported 686 arrests last year of people suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is the fifth year in a row that Rockford has topped the list. One particular Rockford police officer led had the most DUI arrests in the state with 181.
Naperville claimed second and Springfield claimed third on the list with 622 and 553 arrests, respectively. The remaining municipalities on the top ten are as follows: Rock Island, Decatur, Elmhurst, Elgin, Carol Stream, Peoria, and Normal. A separate survey is conducted for Chicago, which claimed 3,037 DUI arrests last year (down 17.8% from 2010). The Illinois State Police totaled 9,719 DUI arrests (down 9.5% from 2010).
AAIM collects date on DUI arrests from over 500 police departments throughout Illinois through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The agency points out that the survey may mean a higher level of enforcement by those municipalities that top the list rather than a higher number of drunk drivers in those particular areas.
