Five Illinois Communities Offering Free Rides on New Year’s Eve

The Safe Ride program is once again providing rides to prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel while celebrating the new year. Orland Park, Tinley Park, Mokena, New Lenox and Palos Height will provide chauffeured rides from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. on New Year’s Eve into New Years Day. The passengers will be treated to a ride in a stretch limousine. Participants must be picked-up and dropped-off within participating towns. The program was developed in 1993 in Orland Park and has since spread. More than 150 individuals took advantage of the free rides last year. The Michael P. Gordon Foundation, honoring a Chicago Police officer killed by a drunk driver 8 years ago, helps fund the program.

The five suburban police departments will conduct saturation patrols through New Year’s Day, keeping an eye out for DUI and seat belt violations. To request a ride, call (855) 230-1637.
