The Rockford Police Department topped a survey of DUI arrests among municipal police departments in Illinois outside of Chicago. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists has released the voluntary survey, which was answered by 68% of nearly 700 police departments in Illinois.
Rockford Police Department ranked first with 743 arrests in 2009. Decatur was second with 730 arrests and Naperville was third with 581 arrests. Other top cities include Carol Stream (499), Aurora (447), Elgin (422), Rock Island (415), Springfield (396), and Waukegan (376). The survey pointed out that the high number of arrests don’t necessarily mean that there are more drunk drivers in those cities, but rather there is more active enforcement of DUI laws.
River Grove claimed the highest DUI arrest rate in Illinois, which had 8.83 arrests per sworn officer. Carol Stream followed second with 7.92. Evanston claimed the largest increase in DUI arrests with 74.6% more in 2009 compared to 2008. The number of DUI arrests made by Chicago police dropped in 2009 from 2008 (4,341 vs. 5,262). Illinois State police increased DUI arrests by 3%. By sheriff’s department, Cook County had the highest number of DUI arrests followed by Lake, DeKalb, Will and McHenry. The survey listed Cook County and DuPage County as having the strongest DUI enforcement.
