New License Plate Scanning Technology for University of Illinois Police

Campus police in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois have begun using a new technology to catch criminals.

Cameras attached the the officers’ squad cars scan license plates of other vehicles passing the officers on the roadway. An on-board computer checks the license plates against the owner’s record and audibly alerts the officer if the vehicle owner has a suspended or revoked license or is wanted by the police for other offenses. The officer then must check the information with the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System and determine an appropriate response to the alert.
