DUI, Skokie/Old Orchard Courthouse
The offense of DUI is a charge commonly prosecuted in the Second Municipal District Courthouse in Skokie, Illinois (also referred to as the Old Orchard Courthouse or Skokie Courthouse). The vast majority of these DUI matters are prosecuted as misdemeanor offenses, although Felony DUIs are prosecuted here as well. There are multiple misdemeanor DUI courtrooms within this courthouse (primarily on the first floor of the building, rooms 101-104) where these cases are heard on a daily basis. Suburban Felony DUI matters are handled in courtrooms on the second floor of this courthouse. Additionally, there are two courtrooms on the first floor where Chicago Felony DUI prosecutions occur.
There are numerous villages that comprise the Second Municipal District, which include Glenview, Northbrook, Skokie, Wilmette, Deerfield, Morton Grove, Niles, Park Ridge, Northfield, Kenilworth, Golf, Lincolnwood, Evanston, Glencoe, Des Plaines, and Winnetka. Each of these villages make arrests for driving under the influence throughout the year and the arresting officers are scheduled to appear and/or testify on DUI and other traffic matters on specified dates throughout the calendar year (called key dates). With the exception of Northbrook, DUI matters at Skokie courthouse are prosecuted by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which is led by an elected official, the Cook County State’s Attorney, Anita Alvarez. Northbrook is the only Village where a team of Village Prosecutors have been contracted by Northbrook to handle first and second offender DUI prosecutions.
In addition to DUI cases, the misdemeanor courtrooms in the Second District courthouse in Skokie may also have any other misdemeanor offense (except Domestic Violence matters) mixed in with DUI cases and other traffic-related matters.
